We are an intergovernmental organisation supported by 32 States. We provide operational medium- and extended-range forecasts and a state-of-the-art super-computing facility for scientific research. We pursue scientific and technical collaboration with satellite agencies and with the European Commission.
Reanalysis confirms record warmth
MJJ_NH_land_temp-120px.png 16 August 2010 Consistent with widespread media reports of extreme heat and adverse impacts in various places, the latest results from ERA-Interim indicate that the average temperature over land areas of the extratropical northern hemisphere reached a new high in July 2010. May and June 2010 were also unusually warm.

MACC Products Related to Russian Fires
Moscow.smoke.full.jpg 12 August 2010 MACC makes daily estimates of the emission of aerosols from fires detected by satellite measurements of thermal radiation. It also assimilates satellite measurements of the optical depth of aerosols.

The first TV picture from space?
TIROS-first-weather-picture-120px.png 06 August 2010 This image of clear skies over Nova Scotia and the coast of Maine has been widely presented in recent years as the first TV picture from space, taken a little over fifty years ago by the dedicated meteorological satellite TIROS 1 on the day of its launch, 1 April 1960. But comparison with corresponding weather maps produced from the ERA-40 reanalysis has led to confirmation that whilst this image is one of the early pictures from TIROS 1, it is certainly not the first.

The Ensemble of Data Assimilations and its use in the EPS
PDS_input_120px.png 25 June 2010 On Tuesday, 22 June 2010, ECMWF implemented an Ensemble of Data Assimilations (EDA). The EDA is designed to provide information about the uncertainty in the analysis of atmospheric observations that provides the starting point for ECMWF's forecasts. In this implementation, the output from the EDA is used to improve the representation of initial-time uncertainty in the forecasts of the Ensemble Prediction System (EPS). The result is a more reliable estimation of forecast uncertainty.
